Premier League| Goals from Buendia and Luiz hand Villa their first victory of the year against Tottenham
Aston Villa secured their first victory of 2023 with a 2-0 win against Tottenham.
Spurs had most of the possession in the first half but couldn't do enough to break the deadlock.
The closest chance fell to the path, or rather, the head of Harry Kane in the 40th minute after Ivan Perisic rounded up Villa shotstopper Robin Olsen before lining up a cross for the Englishman but Ashley Young did well to clear his effort off the line.
Heung-Min Son tried his luck from a freekick late in the half but Olsen saved it comfortably.
Villa made Spurs pay for their missed chances in the first half as they begun their second half with a banger, opening the scoring in the 50th minute.
Hugo Lloris made a mess of Douglas Luiz shot, with the attempt bouncing off his chest before falling to the side of Ollie Watkins, who raced to set up Emiliano Buendia for the opener.
It was their first shot on target in the game.
Perisic almost got the equalizer for Spurs just 7 minutes later, but his lofted shot just went wide.
Villa made their second shot on target count as Douglas Luis made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute.
The Brazilian played a neat one-two with John McGinn before running into the box, fended off Ryan Sessegnon before tucking home from close range.
It was more than enough to fend off Spurs as they held on to pick up their first victory since November last year.
As for Tottenham, they have conceded at least 2 goals in their last 7 games for the first time since 1988.
Not a record they wanted to hold as they begun the New Year.
Aston Villa moved to 12th place on the table with 21 points while Tottenham Hotspurs loses their chance to take back their 4th place from Manchester United.
