World Cup R16| Morocco makes history as they knock Spain out of the tournament to advance to the quarter finals

Morocco advance to the quarter finals for the first time in their history after beating Spain 3-0 on penalties.

After a tight affair in the opening 90 minutes, the game moved on to the 30 minute extra time, where Morocco had to show their character and remain strong in their defense, with Spain constantly trying to creep through.
Pablo Sarabia could have won the game late in the second half of extra time, but his attempt hit the post.
The game finished with a 0-0 scoreline but the next nerve breaking task ahead was the penalty shootouts.

Advancing to the penalty shootouts,  Espanyol didn't have the best record as prior to today, they had already lost 3 out of 4 shootouts but hoped to wipe away the memory.

Abdelhamid Sabiri scored the first penalty for Morocco, rolling his shot to the right bottom corner.
Sarabia, who could have been Spain's hero in the last minute, couldn't do it this time as his penalty attempt came off the post once again.

Hakim Ziyech stepped up to take Morocco's second spotkick and smashed his effort down the middle, sending Unai Simon the wrong way.
It went from bad to worse for Spain as Carlos Soler had his attempt saved by Yassine Bounou.

Badr Banoune could have won the game for Morocco with his penalty, but for the first time in the game, Unai Simon had it covered, diving to his right to save the tame kick.

Captain Sergio Busquets was tasked with the responsibility of restoring life back into the team, as he was given the third penalty for Spain, but unfortunately for him, Bounou remained on alert to read his movement and saved his trick.

Achraf Hakimi did the business for the Atlas Lions as he scored his penalty, using a lovely chip to the bottom left corner, which made it 3-0 and was enough to knock Spain out.

Spain have now lost 4 of their 5 penalty shootouts in the World Cup and are the  first to not score a single one since Switzerland in 2006.

As for Morocco, they make history by becoming the 4th African side to reach the quarter finals since Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.
They also became the first North African nation to achieve this feat.

They will have a showdown against Switzerland or Portugal in the quarter finals.
